If you’re “stuck” at home, whether due to illness or injury, it can be easy to get bored. With a few days posted up in the abode or stuck in bed, activities can become redundant. Fortunately, there’s still so much to do from the comfort of your own home—and that’s a statement we can really get behind here at Nova Home Health Care, your source for home health care here in Fairfax, Alexandria, and Arlington. That’s why we began our blog series entitled “Staying Busy While Home Bound.” If you missed out on our last blog, we talked about ideas including simple exercising, puzzles, riddles, games, reading, writing, crafting, knitting, painting and drawing. Today, we’re continuing that theme in Part II of our Staying Busy While Home Bound series. Let’s delve into a few more activities that you can enjoy in the comfort of your home.
Origami
The art of paper folding requires skill and dedication to master, and it’s an excellent way to pass the time. Grab a few dozen squares of coloured paper, an origami book (I’d recommend a beginner book, origami can be extremely complex!), grab a flat surface, and get folding! You can craft beautiful flowers, majestic birds, mythic dinosaurs, and more. Plus, your finished products make an ideal gift!
Volunteer
Volunteering is possible, even from the comfort of your home. If you love to read, and you’re feeling philanthropic, put those two passions to work by recording audiobooks with LibriVox, a free, public domain audiobook recording platform. All you’ll need to get started is a microphone, your computer, and of course, your favourite book. LibriVox accepts recordings from all sorts of people, including those who have never recorded anything! Record a collaborative project with a best friend (you can switch chapter by chapter or character by character), or record alone if you prefer. There are thousands of people looking for new audiobooks to listen to, and thousands of people have volunteered to read and record for them!
Listen to Music (Or Play It)
There’s nothing more relaxing than a cup of coffee, a comfy seat (perhaps on the patio), and your favourite album. Settle in as you flip from side A to side B, and let your thoughts drift away to the music. If you’ve got the gumption, you can dance a bit too, even if you’re confined to your bed for the time being. Pair your favourite music with your favourite activity, your favourite drink, and a favourite snack for the ultimate enjoyment.
Connect With Friends
There are so many ways to connect with friends these days. Texting? Sure. A phone call? Great! What about Skype or Facetime? You can give an old friend a call and catch up. Or video-call a family member that you haven’t seen in a bit. You can see how much your favourite nephew has grown. Or take a look at your second cousin’s latest painting (she is getting quite good!). If you’re pent up in the house, it’s a perfect time to reconnect with old friends and family that you haven’t seen for a while!
Learn
Put the noodle to work, and learn a subject that you’ve never studied before. Take up a new language. Learn about art history. Study of Shakespeare. There are so many resources out there that you can take advantage of. Of course, you can head to the library to pick out a slew of books. Or, if you prefer, you can use online sources like Ted.com and Lynda.com®. Find a fascinating subject, and explore!
Well, we hope that you can make the most of your “staycation.” After all, there’s so much to do, even from the comfort of your own home and your own bed! As always, you can count on us for your at-home health care services.
